Fifa Draw Explained
Here are the key details for the draw and a closer look at how the eight groups will be formulated on Friday ahead of the summer 2018 showpiece in Russia. Altogether, 32 teams involved in the competition will be separated into four pots based on their FIFA world rankings. The ones with highest standings will be placed in Pot 1, and those with the lowest will go in Pot 4. Russia, as the host nation, is an exception in this and it is because they will be placed in the top seeds.
As we know from the past experiences, Pots 2, 3 and 4 have been allocated based on confederation, not on the respective rankings. In a new simplified format, the teams are placed in pots one to four from highest to lowest Fifa ranking with the exception of Russia, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, who are automatically placed in pot one alongside the top seeds.
The other important factor to consider is teams from the same confederation cannot be drawn together. The exception in this instance is UEFA, which can have a maximum of two teams in the same group.
